A Word About Unsolicited Redesigns →

Khoi Vinh, former design director for NYTimes.com:
Unsolicited redesigns are terrific and fun and useful, and I hope designers never stop doing them. But as they do so, I also hope they remember it helps no one — least of all the author of the redesign — to assume the worst about the original source and the people who work hard to maintain and improve it, even though those...

“Introducing Final Cut Pro X”
Apple: Here's Final Cut Pro X.
Editors: This is an outrage. Where is EDL? Where is OMF?! What have you done with XML?!
Apple: Shut up, nerds. Here it is. It's the future.
Editors: So help me God, I will switch to Adobe Premiere.
Apple: You do that.
Editors: That's it. I'm switching now. I am NOT TO BE TRIFLED WITH.
Apple: Enjoy.
Editors: Here I go. Adobe Premiere. Here I go.
Apple: Steve Jobs!

I’ve handed over several PSDs to the crew at WooThemes, a leading source for customizable WordPress themes. I’m quite pleased with how my WordPress template, which I’ve called Brief, turned out. It’s now up to their exceptional front-end team to turn my designs into markup and make adjustments…
I absolutely love the design. Perfect for displaying large photos and images!...

I’m astounded that there hasn’t been a peep from Gruber about the problems and inconsistencies in the Mac App Store application, and those of the apps sold on it. My first experience with the Mac App Store was a purchase of the new Twitter app, of which Gruber had this to say:
My new…

Off to the Kröller-Müller Museum. Final destination: Amsterdam, where there will be a celebration of my reluctant journey toward my mid-twenties.
Welcome to Holland then! Don’t forget to visit the Euromast… as corny as it sounds, it has the best view in Holland if you ask me ;)

Exiting the text-typing mode in Illustrator
mrgan:
If you work with text boxes in Photoshot a lot, you get used to finishing your text entry not by clicking another tool (which is slow because you have to get one hand off the keyboard) but by hitting the right-most Enter key on your keyboard. While it and Return usually do the same thing, in Photoshop they’re different; Return gives you a new line, Enter commits your text and switches you...

Teaching the clients
A lot of design- and developercompanies seem to try to educate their clients to make them understand why certain things are done. The problem with saying “I make standards compliant website” is the same as telling a client something along the lines of “if I increase the lineheight, it will look better”.
In both cases the client doesn’t care because they don’t see the difference. It’s something...
